Completely In The Present?

Film Screening and Panel

Iconic filmmaker John Smith and Paul Williams, producer of the astoundingly inspiring documentary Completely in the Present, speak here about the processes of indeterminacy, control in film and the creative process as lived by the artist.

Velvet Underground member Tony Conrad (1940-2016) was an avant-garde musical pioneer who became an auto-didactic fine artist, structuralist film maker, broadcaster, teacher and activist. Paul Williams worked with him for 16 years before Conrad passed away, to create the film. Watching it at a small screening, I was struck by how much Conrad had in common with John Smith and having chanced upon meeting Smith, the plot began to be laid for this screening.

I wrote about organising the event for UAL, here.

Part of the Visiting Practitioner series at the Sound Arts Department at LCC, we were joined here by a Master Journalism student from the same college.

After finally raising the funds for the event from UAL ((University of the Arts London) and LCC (London College of Communication), I made the posters and pasted them up around different buildings across London (UAL is spread wide across London College of Fashion, Chelsea School of Art, Central Saint Martins and more). I was 8 months pregnant at the time of screening, and these were my last days in town and taking trains…which means I have not taken a train or been to town since Nov 2019!
